Round trip or one-way dummy ticket for a visa: which one to submit, and when a one-way is right
The request form asks whether you want a one-way or a return itinerary, and the answer depends on who will read the document. A consulate wants to see you leave. A check-in agent wants to see you leave the country you are flying to. Here is how to choose, with the cases where a one-way reservation is exactly right.

In short
- For a visa application, hold a return, or an entry sector plus an exit sector, with dates that match the stay you have asked for. The officer is assessing whether you intend to leave.
- A one-way reservation suits airport checks when you already hold the other leg, relocations on work or residence visas, and trips where the exit will be by land, sea or a different airline.
- If the return date is not fixed, book a plausible one. The visa ticket includes two free date or route changes within 30 days, so the date can follow your plan.
- The visa ticket and the return ticket cost the same, LKR 5,490 (about $18) per passenger. The difference is timing and who the document is built to satisfy.
The short answer
For a visa application, submit a round-trip dummy ticket, or an itinerary that shows you entering and leaving, because the officer reading the file is deciding whether you intend to leave before the visa expires, and a one-way reservation leaves that question open. A one-way dummy ticket is the right choice in narrower cases: an airline or immigration check where you already hold the other leg, a relocation on a work or residence visa, or a trip that ends by land, sea or on a different carrier.
Both are the same kind of document: a genuine, unpaid airline reservation with a six-character PNR that resolves on the airline’s “Manage my booking” page and carries no ticket number. What changes is the shape of the itinerary and the date it is timed for. The guide to what a dummy ticket is covers the document itself. This one is about which itinerary to hold.
Why a visa officer wants to see the return
Short-stay visas are issued on the basis that you will go home. The Schengen Visa Code asks the consulate to assess whether the applicant intends to leave the territory before the visa expires, and every other tourist and visit visa has a version of the same test. The flight itinerary is one of the few documents in the file that speaks to it directly. A return sector says: here is the day I leave, on this flight, and it fits inside the dates I have asked for.
A one-way reservation says only that you will arrive. The officer then has to infer the departure from your leave letter, hotel booking and bank statements, and an inference is weaker than a booking. Files are rarely refused for a one-way itinerary alone, but it is an avoidable question mark, and the Schengen refusal ground about intention to leave is the box you are trying to keep empty.
The exit does not have to be a return to your home airport. Colombo to Paris, then Rome to Colombo, is a complete entry-plus-exit itinerary. What matters is that the file shows a departure from the visa area on a date inside the stay you requested.
Schengen, UK and US: what each one asks for
Schengen consulates, and the centres that receive files for them such as VFS Global, TLScontact and BLS, list a flight reservation or itinerary on their checklists and expect it to show the entry and exit dates. Those dates should match the intended arrival and departure fields on the application form and the nights on your hotel booking. Several checklists say not to buy a ticket until the visa is granted, which is the whole reason a reservation exists. The Schengen visa guide for Sri Lankan applicants and the Schengen itinerary sample walk through the matching.
The UK Standard Visitor application does not require a ticket, and the official guidance is not to buy one before you have a decision. What it does ask for is a credible plan: where you will stay, what you will do and when you will leave, with the funds to cover it. A return reservation supports that plan and gives the dates in your cover letter a document to sit on. The UK visa guide covers how applicants use it.
A US B1/B2 application asks for intended travel dates on the DS-160 and does not require an itinerary at the interview, so most applicants do not need a dummy ticket for the file. A reservation matters later: Visa Waiver Program travellers on ESTA must hold a return or onward ticket at check-in, and some interview applicants bring an itinerary to show a concrete plan. In both cases the return sector does the work.
| Application | Flight document on the checklist? | Shape to hold | Dates must match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen short-stay | Yes, a reservation or itinerary | Return, or entry plus exit | Form dates and hotel nights |
| UK Standard Visitor | No, but a travel plan is expected | Return | Cover letter and leave dates |
| US B1/B2 interview | No | Optional return, if you bring one | DS-160 travel dates |
| US ESTA, at check-in | Return or onward ticket, checked by the airline | Return or onward | Within the 90-day stay |
| GCC visit visas | Usually, as the sponsor or typing centre specifies | Return | Visa validity |
| Visa on arrival (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia) | Onward ticket, checked at check-in | Return or onward | Within the permitted stay |
When a one-way dummy ticket is the right choice
The one-way reservation is not a lesser product. It is correct when the second leg is already covered or does not exist yet.
- You already hold the other ticket. You bought a one-way fare and need proof of onward travel for check-in. A one-way reservation out of the destination completes the pair. This is the everyday case for one-way flyers, digital nomads and visa-on-arrival entries, and the proof of onward travel guide covers what the desk actually checks.
- You are relocating. Work visas, residence permits, student visas and family reunification are long-stay categories where a return would look odd. The checklist, if it asks for a flight at all, wants the arrival.
- You will leave by another route. Overland from Thailand into Malaysia, a ferry from Bali, or a low-cost carrier you will book locally. The visa file still needs an exit, so hold that exit as its own one-way sector rather than a return on the arriving airline.
- The onward country is different. Colombo to Bangkok on one reservation, Bangkok to Hanoi on another, each timed to the check that will read it.
Multi-city and open-jaw itineraries
An open-jaw itinerary arrives in one city and departs from another: into Amsterdam, out of Frankfurt. A multi-city itinerary adds stops in between. Both are common for Schengen tours and both are accepted, as long as the first sector enters the area on your intended arrival date and the last sector leaves it on your intended departure date. The consulate that handles the file is decided by the main destination or the first entry, and the itinerary should agree with the form on that.
We hold both shapes as a single reservation where the airline permits it, so one PNR opens every sector. The first two sectors are included in the price; each sector beyond that is LKR 500 (about $2). Keep internal hops you will do by train or a budget airline off the reservation and describe them in your cover letter. An itinerary that is simpler than the trip is fine. One that contradicts it is not.
If you do not know your return date
Pick a plausible one and book it. Applicants sometimes ask for a one-way reservation because the return is undecided, and that trades a small uncertainty for a larger one. The officer does not expect the date to be final; most checklists say not to buy the ticket yet. What the officer expects is a date consistent with the rest of the file, inside the stay you have requested.
Work back from the visa dates
Take the intended departure date on the form, or the last night on your hotel booking, and use that as the return date. If you have asked for 15 days, the return sector should leave on or before day 15.
Hold the return on those dates
Request the visa ticket with the entry and return sectors. It is issued as one reservation, live on your submission date.
Change it if the plan moves
Every visa ticket includes up to two free date or route changes within 30 days. If the appointment or the plan moves, send the new dates on WhatsApp and a fresh PDF is issued, usually the same day.
Buy the real ticket after the decision
Once the visa is granted, buy whichever dates you finally settle on. The reservation was never meant to be flown.
Visa ticket or return ticket: what actually differs
Both products on the pricing page cost LKR 5,490 (about $18) per passenger and both are real, unpaid reservations on the same carriers. The visa ticket is shaped for a consulate: a return or entry-plus-exit itinerary, timed to your submission date, with up to two free date or route changes within 30 days. The return ticket is shaped for a counter: the sector that proves you leave the destination, issued close to the day you fly.
In practice the choice is simple. If the document goes into a visa file, request the dummy ticket for visa and choose a return itinerary on the form. If the document is for an airport counter and you already hold the other leg, request the dummy return ticket, timed to the day you fly.
| Situation | Hold | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen, UK, GCC or any short-stay visa file | Return, or entry plus exit | Visa ticket |
| US B1/B2 interview, if you want to show a plan | Return | Visa ticket |
| Work, residence or student visa | One-way arrival, if the checklist asks for a flight | Visa ticket, one-way |
| One-way fare bought, onward proof needed at check-in | One-way out of the destination | Return ticket |
| Visa on arrival in Thailand, Bali or the Philippines | Return or onward inside the permitted stay | Return ticket |
| Tour through several Schengen countries | Open-jaw or multi-city, entry and exit inside the visa dates | Visa ticket |
| Return date undecided | Return on a plausible date, changed later if needed | Visa ticket |
Whichever shape you need, the request form takes the route, the dates and the names as printed in the passport. We confirm the itinerary on WhatsApp or email before any payment, issue within one to six hours during support hours, and state the expiry with the PDF so you can check the PNR before anyone else does.
Questions people ask
- Should a dummy ticket for a visa be one-way or round trip?
- Round trip, or an itinerary with an entry and an exit sector. The consulate is assessing whether you will leave within the stay you have requested, and a return sector answers that directly. Use a one-way only for relocations or where the exit is covered by another booking.
- Is a one-way dummy ticket accepted for a Schengen visa?
- Usually only where the file explains the exit some other way, such as a long-stay category or an onward booking on another carrier. For a short-stay visit, hold the entry and exit sectors on dates that match the form.
- Can I use a dummy return ticket as proof of onward travel?
- Yes. Check-in staff and immigration officers look the PNR up on the airline site in the same way a consulate does. Time it to the day you fly, because a hold issued weeks earlier may have lapsed.
- What if I do not know my return date yet?
- Book the return on a plausible date inside your visa dates. The visa ticket includes up to two free date or route changes within 30 days, so you can move it if the plan changes, and you buy the real ticket only after the decision.
- Does a round-trip dummy ticket cost more than a one-way?
- No. The visa ticket is LKR 5,490 (about $18) per passenger whether the itinerary is one-way or return. Only sectors beyond the first two on a multi-city itinerary are charged extra, at LKR 500 (about $2) each.
This guide is general information for travellers, not legal or immigration advice. Rules and checklists change, so read the current requirements for your own mission before you submit. A flight reservation is unpaid and cannot be used to check in or board a flight, and no document guarantees a visa decision.
