Dummy ticket vs fake ticket: why a real PNR matters
The two words are used interchangeably online, and they should not be. One is an ordinary travel-industry booking. The other is a forged document that can sink an application.

In short
- A dummy ticket exists in the airline system; a fake ticket exists only as a file.
- Consular staff check references, and a code that returns nothing is worse than no ticket at all.
- Editing an itinerary PDF is document fraud, and refusals for it follow you for years.
- Ask any seller one question: can I look this reference up on the airline website?
The difference in one line
A dummy ticket is a real reservation that has not been paid for. A fake ticket is a picture of a reservation that never existed. The first is a booking with a lifespan; the second is a graphic file.
| Aspect | Dummy ticket | Fake ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Held in the airline reservation system | Yes | No |
| Reference resolves on Manage Booking | Yes | No, or belongs to somebody else |
| How it is produced | Booked through a travel system | Edited in a PDF or image editor |
| What a check finds | Your name and your flights | Nothing found |
| Legal standing | An ordinary unpaid booking | A forged document |
Everything else follows from that first row. If the booking exists, the document is honest about what it is. If it does not, no amount of formatting will save it.
How a fake airline ticket is made, and how it fails
The common recipe is to take a genuine itinerary the seller received once, open it in an editor, and replace the name, the dates and the route. The layout is perfect because it started life as a real airline document. The reference is either invented, or left untouched from the original booking, which is worse.
Both versions fail the same way, and the failure takes seconds:
- The officer opens the airline’s Manage Booking page and types the reference with your surname.
- An invented code returns “booking not found”. A borrowed code returns a stranger’s itinerary, or refuses the surname.
- Either result tells the officer the document in front of them was manufactured.
What consular staff check on a fake return ticket or itinerary
Not every file is verified, and staff will not tell you which ones are. Assume yours is. The checks are quick and they are the same everywhere:
The reference resolves
Six characters plus your surname on the airline site. This is the only check that needs no training and no phone call.
The name matches the passport
Surname and given names as printed in the machine-readable zone. “Perera Mahesh” and “Mahesh Perera” are the same person, but a missing middle name on a long-form given name can be queried.
The dates match the rest of the file
Your cover letter, your hotel booking, your leave letter and your itinerary should describe one trip. Contradictions are noticed more often than a missing document.
The routing is plausible
A Colombo applicant flying to Frankfurt via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul reads normally. A routing invented to look cheap, with an unexplained twenty-hour gap, invites questions.
Where the legal line sits
Making a booking you may not use is not deception. Airlines allow unpaid holds by design, travel agents create them constantly, and most consulates positively prefer a reservation to a purchased ticket, because they do not want applicants losing money on a refusal.
Altering a document to state something untrue is a different act. Submitting a forged document to a mission is deception under the immigration rules of essentially every country on the list Sri Lankans apply to. The consequences are not a polite refusal. UK rules, for example, treat deception as grounds for a re-entry ban measured in years, and other missions record the finding in systems that later applications are checked against.
Why both products exist at the same price
The two sit side by side online, often for similar money, which is why buyers cannot tell them apart. The reason is cost of production. A real reservation requires access to a booking system, a booking that is genuinely held, and someone to reissue it when dates change. An edited PDF requires ten minutes and no ongoing obligation, so a seller offering one can undercut, promise instant delivery, and disappear afterwards.
That difference shows up in the small print rather than the price. Instant delivery at three in the morning, no questions about your appointment date, no mention of expiry, and no way to reach a person afterwards are all signs that nothing is being held on your behalf. A booking service has to ask when you submit, because that is what decides when it issues.
How to tell what you are buying
Sellers rarely advertise the difference, so judge them on behaviour rather than wording. Five signals separate a booking service from a document shop:
- They invite verification. A real service tells you where to check the reference and expects you to do it.
- They talk about expiry. Holds have a lifespan. A seller who never mentions it is not holding anything.
- They ask for your name as per passport. A forger does not need it to be right; a booking does.
- They refuse to promise approval. Nobody who understands the process claims a document decides a visa.
- They say you cannot fly on it. An unpaid reservation has no ticket number, and an honest seller leads with that.
The test takes a minute. Ask for the reference and the airline, then open the airline’s own site and look it up yourself before you submit anything. Our PNR verification guide walks through the exact pages for SriLankan, Emirates, Qatar Airways and flydubai, plus CheckMyTrip and ViewTrip.
Everything we issue is meant to survive that test. If it ever does not, message us and we will reissue it. You can see the layout on our sample ticket page, or start with the request form.
This guide is general information for travellers, not legal or immigration advice. Rules and checklists change, so read the current requirements for your own mission before you submit. A flight reservation is unpaid and cannot be used to check in or board a flight, and no document guarantees a visa decision.
