How to verify a booking reference on airline websites

Verifying a reservation takes under a minute and needs two things: the six-character reference and the surname on the booking. Do it yourself before you submit anything.

In short

  • You need the booking reference and the exact surname, nothing else.
  • Always start on the airline’s own website rather than a search result.
  • Check the operating airline’s site, not the one you searched on.
  • “Not found” usually means a typo, the wrong airline or an expired hold.

What you need before you start

  • The booking reference. Six characters, letters and digits, such as K4T9BX. Airlines label it PNR, booking reference, reservation code or confirmation number. They all mean the same field.
  • The surname. Exactly as printed on the reservation, which should be exactly as printed in the passport.
  • The operating airline. The carrier whose flight number appears on the sector, which is the site that holds the record.

The method that works on any airline

  1. Open the airline’s own website

Type the domain yourself. Search results for “manage booking” are a well-known target for lookalike sites that harvest references and personal details.

  2. Find Manage Booking or My Trips

It sits in the top navigation on desktop and behind the menu on mobile. Some airlines label it “Retrieve booking”.

  3. Enter the reference and surname

Surname only, not the full name, unless the form asks for both fields separately.

  4. Read the itinerary that opens

Confirm the passenger name, every flight number, every date and the route. This is the moment to catch a spelling error, while it is still free to fix.

The airlines Sri Lankan travellers use most

SriLankan Airlines (UL)

Open srilankan.com Manage Booking and enter the six-character reference with the lead passenger’s surname. More detail on our SriLankan Airlines page.

Emirates (EK)

Go to emirates.com Manage your booking, enter the reference and surname. Emirates records publish quickly after issue. See the Emirates page.

Qatar Airways (QR)

Use qatarairways.com Manage booking with the reference and surname. Details on the Qatar Airways page.

flydubai (FZ)

Open flydubai.com Manage booking. As a low-cost carrier, flydubai holds reservations for a shorter window, so check soon after issue. See the flydubai page.

Every carrier we book has its own page with the exact link and what to click. The full list is on our airlines index.

CheckMyTrip and ViewTrip

These are traveller-facing tools run by the global distribution systems that hold airline reservations. CheckMyTrip belongs to Amadeus and ViewTrip to Travelport. If a booking was made through one of those systems, the reference resolves there as well as on the airline site.

A booking may appear on one and not the other, depending on which system issued it, and some airlines suppress records from these tools entirely. That is normal and says nothing about the booking. The airline’s own site is the authority.

When to check, and who else will

Check the reference twice. Once when the PDF arrives, so any spelling error is caught while it costs nothing to fix, and once on the morning you submit the file or fly, so you know the hold is still live. Those two checks take two minutes between them and remove almost every unpleasant surprise this document can produce.

Other people may check it too, and they will not tell you when they do. A visa officer reviewing your file, a VFS clerk sorting documents at intake, a check-in agent in Colombo weighing whether to board you on a one-way ticket. None of them will ask your permission, and none of them will call you if the lookup fails. They will simply act on what they see, which is why doing the check yourself first matters.

One caution about where you type the reference. Manage Booking pages are a standing target for lookalike sites, because a booking reference and a surname are enough to open somebody’s travel record. Type the airline domain into the address bar yourself, and never enter a reference on a page you reached through an advertisement or a message.

A reference that never resolved on any airline site is a different problem, and it is the reason to care where a document comes from. We cover that in dummy ticket vs fake ticket.

Verify yours the day you submit. If anything looks wrong, message us on WhatsApp and we will correct or reissue it. To order, use the request form.

This guide is general information for travellers, not legal or immigration advice. Rules and checklists change, so read the current requirements for your own mission before you submit. A flight reservation is unpaid and cannot be used to check in or board a flight, and no document guarantees a visa decision.
