Flight reservation without payment: the five ways, and which ones survive a check
You need a flight document for a visa or an airline counter, and buying the fare before the decision is the one thing every embassy tells you not to do. There are five honest ways to hold a flight without paying for it. They are not equal, and the difference shows up when someone checks.

In short
- A reservation without payment is a seat held in the airline system under a booking reference, with no ticket number. It is what embassy checklists mean by a flight itinerary.
- Airline holds are the cheapest and shortest. Agent reservations last longest and are the easiest to verify. Free-cancellation bookings tie up money. Generators produce nothing that can be checked.
- Pick the method by how long the document has to stay live, not by price alone. A hold that lapses before the appointment is worth nothing.
- Whichever route you take, the officer will type the reference into the airline website. Choose the one that survives that.
What “without payment” actually means
Every airline booking has two stages. First a reservation is created: seats are held, a six-character booking reference is issued, and the itinerary exists in the airline’s system. Then, if a fare is paid, a ticket is issued against that reservation and a thirteen-digit ticket number appears. A flight reservation without payment is a booking that stops after the first stage.
That first-stage booking is real. It resolves on the airline’s “Manage my booking” page, which is why consulates accept it as evidence of a travel plan and why it is the document they describe as a flight itinerary for a visa application. What it cannot do is get you on the plane. Without a ticket number there is nothing to check in against.
The five ways, compared
| Method | Cost | How long it stays live | Verifiable on the airline site? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airline “hold my fare” option | Free to a small fee | Hours to a few days, set by the airline | Yes, while the hold lasts | A check that happens within a day or two |
| Reservation through a travel agent | A flat service fee | Days to two weeks, extendable or reissued | Yes | Visa files with an appointment date and processing time |
| Free-cancellation booking | The full fare, refunded later | Until you cancel, usually within 24 hours | Yes, as a paid ticket | Same-day checks when you can afford to tie up the fare |
| Refundable fare, refunded after | The full fare plus any fee, refunded in weeks | Until refunded | Yes, as a paid ticket | Applicants who may actually fly those dates |
| Template or generator | Free or a few dollars | Never live | No | Nothing that will be checked |
Four of the five produce a genuine reservation. The fifth produces a picture of one, and it belongs in the table only so that nobody mistakes it for the others.
1. The airline’s own hold option
Several airlines let you hold a fare during the booking process, sometimes free, sometimes for a small charge, for a fixed window before payment is due. The reservation is as real as any other and the booking reference resolves immediately. The limitation is time. Holds are measured in hours or a few days, and they end without warning. For a document that will be checked tomorrow it is ideal. For a visa file that a centre will read next week it is usually too short.
2. A reservation through a travel agent
Agents book through the global reservation systems the airlines use, and can hold a reservation for longer than the public hold option, extend it, and reissue it if your dates move. This is what a dummy ticket is: an agent-held reservation, issued as a PDF, timed to be live on the day your file is read. You pay the agent a service fee rather than the airline a fare.
Two things matter when choosing the agent. The reservation must sit on a real carrier and resolve on that carrier’s website, and the agent must tell you the expiry date unprompted. The checks worth running on any seller take five minutes. Our own version of this is the flight reservation for visa.
3. A free-cancellation booking
Some airlines and booking sites allow a paid booking to be cancelled without penalty within a short window, most often 24 hours. You buy the fare, print the confirmation, and cancel inside the window for a full refund. The document is a genuine ticket, which is more than any checklist asks for.
The drawbacks are practical. The full fare leaves your account and comes back days later, the window is short, and the itinerary you submitted will no longer resolve once you cancel. If the consulate looks it up after the cancellation, you have submitted a booking that no longer exists. It suits a check that happens the same day and nothing longer.
4. A refundable fare
Buying a fully flexible ticket and refunding it after the decision is the most expensive route by far, but it is the right one for a traveller who genuinely expects to fly those dates. The reservation is a paid ticket, so nobody can question it. The cost is the cash tied up for weeks and the cancellation fees and taxes that many airlines keep. The comparison with a dummy ticket sets out when each makes sense.
5. Templates and generators, and why they fail
Websites that “generate” a ticket from a form produce a PDF with a made-up reference. Nothing is held anywhere. The moment an officer types the reference into the airline site, the document fails, and a file that contained a fabricated document is treated very differently from a file that was merely incomplete. The difference between a dummy ticket and a fake ticket explains where the legal line sits. Do not cross it to save a few dollars.
Choosing the right one for your situation
- Visa file with an appointment next week or later: agent reservation, timed to the appointment and the centre’s processing time.
- Check-in or immigration onward-travel check tomorrow: an airline hold if the carrier offers one for that route, otherwise an agent reservation issued the day before you fly.
- You will probably fly these exact dates: a refundable or flexible fare. Nothing to refund if the plan holds.
- Same-day check and you can tie up the fare: free-cancellation booking, cancelled after the check.
- Any check at all: never a template.
Whichever method you use, run the PNR check yourself before you hand the document to anyone. It is the same check they will run.
Questions people ask
- Can I book a flight without paying and use it for a visa?
- Yes. Embassies ask for a flight reservation or itinerary, not a paid ticket, and most say not to buy before the decision. A reservation held without payment carries a booking reference the consulate can verify.
- How long does a flight reservation without payment last?
- It depends on the method. Airline holds last hours to a few days. Agent reservations last days to two weeks and can be extended or reissued. Free-cancellation bookings last until you cancel, usually within 24 hours.
- Is a flight reservation without payment legal?
- Yes, when it is a genuine reservation in an airline system. Airlines and agents hold unticketed reservations every day. What is not legal is submitting a fabricated document, which is what a template or generator produces.
- Can the embassy tell that the reservation is unpaid?
- Yes, and it does not matter. The status shows as a reservation rather than a ticketed booking, which is exactly what the checklist asks for. Officers are looking at names, dates, route and whether the reference resolves.
- Can I fly on a flight reservation without payment?
- No. Without a ticket number there is nothing to check in against. Once the visa is granted, buy the real ticket for the dates you finally choose.
This guide is general information for travellers, not legal or immigration advice. Rules and checklists change, so read the current requirements for your own mission before you submit. A flight reservation is unpaid and cannot be used to check in or board a flight, and no document guarantees a visa decision.
